Mortgage Insurance
Definition: Insurance policies provided by non-government insurers that protects a lender against losses if the borrower defaults.
Mortgage insurance, in a few words, may be defined as a policy that guarantees the repayment of mortgage loans in the event of death or disability of the mortgager. Mortgage insurance is one of the several types of credit insurance policies available in the market. Some government products also include a mortgage insurance coverage, as a way to protect the lender against default.
Mortgage insurance may be differentiated as it follows:
- Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI): is basically the default insurance on mortgage loans, which is provided by private insurance companies in general.
- Mortgage's Title Insurance: It’s a different policy that protects the lender from future claims to ownership of a property already mortgaged.
